Our Ghosts by Jean-Pierre Vidrine of Tucson Ghost Tours
by Jean-Pierre Vidrine
Tucson has been around since 1775. That’s longer than the United States of America has been the United States of America. In all that time, Tucson has accumulated a lot of history. A lot of history means a lot of stories . . . including ghost stories. That’s where I come in. As a Ghost Host for the Tucson Ghost Tour, I excel at telling ghost stories. Think of me as a sort of Crypt Keeper, only a tad more handsome. The fine folks at Breakout Studios on 4th Avenue have asked me to share some of my spooky yarns here. I’m sure you’ll understand that I don’t want to spoil any stories that I tell on my tour. Fortunately, though, Tucson has a lot more in the way of haunted locations than the nine or so buildings we do visit. There’s nothing to stop me from telling about them.
I thought I’d start with something a little close to the dance studio. No, dance students, you don’t have to worry. I haven’t found out about any hauntings in the studio. But, across the street is a place that most people would not be surprised to find out is haunted. Founded in 2004, the Surly Wench Pub is a big part of Tucson’s Goth scene with its black facade and ghoulish artwork inside. The pub is also host to burlesque acts.
The building’s history goes back a lot farther than 2004, however. Some people even still remember it as “Choo Choo’s” and “Night Train,” names it had under previous owners in the 1970s and ‘80s. Reportedly, certain previous owners were involved in the drug culture of the 70s, and they were known to throw wild parties.
Today, employees of the pub testify to seeing shadowy figures moving about the place. Some have even reported seeing glassware fly off the shelf. More than one person has said to have felt uneasy in the pub’s basement where, incidentally, there is an actual coffin.
A team of paranormal investigators reported strange audio evidence, cold spots, and even feeling touched. The team was still reluctant to commit to saying the pub was definitely haunted, though they’ve expressed interest in returning.
Now, my Ghost Tours are walking tours that take place downtown. One night, while driving to the Tour’s meeting spot, heavy rains and road closures forced me to take a detour from my usual route. This detour took me down North Granada Avenue. I was rather stuck by the nice buildings on that street. Even in the heavy rain, they were beautiful structures. Had I remembered the words of my Supreme Ghost Hostess, Renee, in her book Southern Arizona’s Most Haunted, I would have realized that I was very near another haunted Tucson location: The Manning House.
Construction began on the Manning House in 1907 by a man named Levi Howell Manning. This was after he served for two years as Tucson’s mayor. Before that, he had worked in the electricity industry. From the small fortune he made selling his interest in the electric company, Manning built the Santa Rita Hotel and helped bring the trolley to Tucson. By the way, the Santa Rita Hotel is (sort of) one of the stops on the Tucson Ghost Tour.
The house was the home for Manning and his somewhat large and extended family. Manning died in 1935. Since then, the house that bears his name has been through different renovations and different owners.
People have witnessed the apparition of a man pacing up and down the hallways holding a candlestick. More than one person is sure that this is the spirit of Levi Howell Manning himself. And, he’s not alone. The apparitions of a young girl and a gentleman have been seen having a leisurely stroll in front of the building.
The kitchen faucet and appliances being turned on and off by unseen hands have unnerved more than one individual. Possibly, though, no one was ever more unnerved in the house than one particular party guest who had gone to the restroom. While freshening up, she saw more than her own reflection in the mirror. She actually saw another face floating behind her. She outright vowed never to return to the Manning House.
If you liked these little histories and spooky tales, you can hear more. Go to Tucson Ghost Tour to make your reservation. This humble Ghost Host will gladly guide through haunted downtown Tucson.

The Missing Parts
The Missing Parts are an acoustic instrumental quartet featuring violin, lap-steel guitar, cello, and guitar. Written collaboratively, the songs journey through an odyssey of dreamscapes, always arcing back and forth from the source: One Madly Dreaming Mind. Their influences are literally all over the map: tango, Roma, Turkish, a wide range of classical composers and styles, folk music from old time to new-grass, and too many more influences to list without sounding like a world music textbook. They particularly like soulful instrumental music (and, hence, the movie scores of Rota, Morricone, Hermann (Bernard, not Pee Wee), and to a lesser extent Badalmanti). The Missing Parts feature Oliver Blaylock on violin, Douglas Francisco on lap steel, Brian Hullfish on cello, and Paul Wright on guitar and percussion.

Heart & Soul: Workshop with Tadd Gadduang (SYTYCD8)
by Clayton Ashcraft
Wow, how can I explain the workshop this last weekend with Tadd Gadduang?! Heart and soul would be the two words to define his class, the knowledge shared, and the feeling of the room. I take from not only my conversations with him to and from Tucson, but what he had to say about being an artist in everything. Tadd said,"As artists or whatever form of artistry you do; singing, dancing, painting, anything…anything that you do that expresses in a sense you're giving something to those who are engaged who are committed to what you are projecting on stage. Sometimes I am guilty of this…I would just move to music…I wasn't giving or sharing. I try to draw from experiences in my life and express it through what I do." The heart and soul of the dancers, ranging from kids to adults, that attended the workshop left the studio with a better idea of what being a 'true artist' is all about.
Part of my mission for Step X Step Dance was featuring talented dancers in small communities that don't normally have a large voice like other dancers, studios, or crews may have! The mission I set to achieve and the artistry of Tadd's class fused together to create a force of progression, happiness, and motivation for the future. No one should be left out of the equation that makes up this beautiful lifestyle and culture, which is something that I feel Tadd hit up very well in his explanation of 'artistry.'
After a very successful master class with Tadd, he spent another hour or so talking with a few of the dancers from the workshop outside. I could see him giving one on one time with many dancers who were itching to pick his brain on street dance culture, So You Think You Can Dance, making the leap to L.A., and many other subjects. Outside while talking to a few studio dancers he mentioned how the real important part of a class or workshop is the knowledge that is taught about the art, the culture, the foundations, the founders, and how it relates to our life. I look back now and wish I had really got that on camera because we all felt like we had the most nourishing meal for our minds, bodies, and spirits!
Big Thank You to Todd, Janna, Jolie, Garrett, and everyone at BreakOut Studios! Tadd absolutely loved the dancers, his experience and wants to come back! Thank you to everyone that came from others studios in Tucson and supported, we would love to support your studio as well! From the bottom of my heart, it's people like you that help make this dream of mine, Step X Step Dance, come true! Slowly, but surely we are "uniting dancers worldwide step by step!" Please make sure to check us out at StepXStep!

Très Boutique: Love in the Details
by Jolie Roberson & Todd Wilson
Walking into this boutique is an experience in and of itself. Local artists' creations grace the walls and antique and vintage ephemera, collectibles, furniture, and fixtures make this spot comfortable and prove that good merchandising is an art. Akiko, one of the store owners, oversees every detail, from dressing mannequins to making sure the art is displayed properly.

il Sogno - "The Dream
by Todd Wilson
Picking specs of food off of fallen garments as I walked to the hamper - I still couldn’t pull together my nights sequence of events. I remember getting ready for something and... blank! The pieces began to fall back into place as I went about my morning ritual. Did I dream of a dining event last night in Tucson where I had 6 amazing courses each designed by Tucson’s top culinary masters? No, it can’t be true.
When my partner in crime, Lindsay Glazer, stumbled into the master bedroom also commenting on an over-stretched belly I knew something had to have happened. “It isn’t just me,” I muttered under my green tea breath. The dream I had was a reality and I then remembered I could relive the experience as I had obnoxiously taken photographs of each plate while saying to Lindsay - “OH MY GAWD”.
I am not a food critic, no where close to that. I am more of a food pupil, student, lover, or wannabe foodie. Through my work I have been able to travel the world sampling some of the most amazing eats that this culinary novice could handle. SIDENOTE: I do not eat sea food - I will tell you I have allergy - but I really just can’t stand it. Sorry. Lindsay, however, loves sea food and she will be my ocean corespondent.
Living in Tucson I think we all look for something new, fresh and exciting to invigorate our life (translation time away from work). The best part of il Sogno was truly that, an escape, a world within our world. I commend chefs Matt Padilla, Kevin Fink and Tavel Bristol-Joseph for allowing me to feel the beauty that is Tucson, one foot in the desert and another in a dream. I will be awaiting another spectacular night from these great minds, so go now! Get to work! I will keep my ears open and try my best to keep you all in the know for the next event. Congratulations to all who made such a night possible.
